Detailed Design

The detailed design takes the high level design a step further by translating the logical design elements into physical entities. So a component such as Citrix Licensing, can be now described in terms of software with hardware details such as server type, IP addresses, number and type of network cards, including configurations to switches, network card teaming and so on.

Requirement Mapping

The detailed requirements are mapped to the relevant detailed design sections, so a mapping about continuity using a secondary data centre for example, will now provide details on defining the technical details of what this encompasses, such as network connectivity to hardware needs.

Physical Details

Sufficient detail in this design document is required so specific technical teams and/or individuals could in theory deploy the architecture. In some instances the detailed design is expanded to include build information such as the steps involved in building servers including installing operating systems and applications but this should be encompassed in seperate build documents which can then be used together as patterns for particular services.

Requirements Traceability

Requirements traceability is the key to success of many projects and by developing design documents, the bulk of the requirements can be mapped and easily traced back.
